14 Carrot Gold Award Winners Announced

Recognizing the efforts of several organizations to promote increased fruits and vegetables consumption in Wisconsin, the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program and the Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity Program have given four “14 Carrot Gold Awards” to well deserving recipients in the past few months.

The 14 Carrot Gold Award recognizes individual and organizational efforts to increase fruit and vegetable consumption in Wisconsin by promoting or increasing access to fruits and vegetables in innovative ways. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified increased fruit and vegetable consumption as a strategy to prevent and reduce the overweight and obesity problem in the nation.

“This award helps us to recognize the great work being done and innovative ideas that our partners have in order to help people make healthier choices when they eat,” said Judy Allen, Coordinator for the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program.

The 14 Carrot Gold Award winners for 2006 are:
  • Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation for their Eat Healthy Rebate program to encourage members to increase the amount of fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables that they eat. Physicians Plus members receive a rebate on shares bought from a Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture Coalition member farm.
  • Laura Graney, RD, CD for her work with the statewide 5 A Day Coalition and the Sheboygan Veggin’ Out Program. The Veggin’ Out farmers’ market cooking demonstrations and nutrition education were publicized through local newspapers and shown on a local cable channel to reach an extensive audience.
  • The Wood County WIC Program for efforts with the Veggin’ Out Program at three Wood County Farmers’ Markets, successfully increasing WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Voucher redemptions above the state average.
  • Fondy Food Center, of Milwaukee for using food stamp card reader machines, and increasing Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Voucher redemptions. They also conducted a variety of cooking demonstrations and nutrition education programs aimed at different audiences.
  • Honorable Mention: Traci Wilson, RD from the Wisconsin Beef Council for her efforts with the Veggin’ Out Program in Dane County.

“One of the goals of the Wisconsin Nutrition and Physical Activity State Plan is to increase the amounts of fruits and vegetables people eat,” said Amy Meinen, Nutrition Coordinator for the Nutrition and Physical Activity Program in the Division of Public Health. “The 14 Carrot Gold Award helps us recognize the great work being done in Wisconsin to accomplish this goal.”
