‘Tis the season for more than giving video games, sitting inside; Physicians Plus Gives $45,000 to get Kids Active

Locally owned Physicians Plus gives children a healthy outlet to channel their energy

The season that brings joy to many children through presents can lead them into a sedentary lifestyle by encouraging them to hunker down in front of a TV or video game for hours on end. To counteract a season of idle behavior, Physicians Plus has donated thousands of dollars to Madison-area organizations so children can get out and get active.

“At this time of year, in such a cold climate, it is essential for children to have places to go to play, burn energy and learn healthy habits,” said Kathryne Auerback, director of marketing, Physicians Plus Insurance Inc. “We believe that supporting efforts that encourage children and their families to lead more active lifestyles is one of the most important ways we can do this.”

The funds will go directly towards programs that children from all over can participate in, learning skills for a healthy lifestyle that they can carry with them as they grow.

“Joining us in supporting one of these organizations is a great way to start off the New Year and show your child you care,” said Auerback.

The funds, a mix of corporate gifts and designation of the annual United Way campaign matching donations, were given to:

• The Salvation Army of Dane County is dedicated to serving those persons with physical and spiritual needs without discrimination.

• Boys & Girls Club of Dane County - Allied Family Center inspires and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

• The YMCA of Dane County is a not-for-profit organization responding to the needs of families in Dane County by providing quality programs which embody values that emphasize healthy lifestyles for the spirit, mind, and body; the Kidzfit program creates physical fitness progress in children that will establish a lifetime of good fitness habits.

• Atwood Community Center’s youth programs enable children from all backgrounds to recreate, socialize, learn, and grow in a safe place with caring adults.

• Dane County Coalition for Neighborhood Child Health provides free physical exams and other screenings, including immunizations, to uninsured Dane County children.
